8 tips for staying fit over the Holidays
Posted on 01 December 2016
It’s that time of year again, everyone. You know what we’re talking about. It’s that time of year when the excuse of I’m just so busy! and I’ll start after the holidays are over takes over your fitness schedule. Working out often gets put on the back burner with all the shopping, traveling, parties, decorating, and end of year details you have to do. But don’t wait till January 1st to hop back into your fitness routine along with everyone else in the world. Staying active, especially during the flu-ridden holiday season, can help keep your immune system strong so you can spend more time enjoying yourself with friends and family rather than being sick. Here are some easy tips to help keep you on track to staying healthy and fit this holiday season.
1.Keep a food journal
All the holiday parties can be overwhelming and can eventually start to blur together. That also means all the delicious food you’ve been eating at each one starts to blur together too. Keeping track of your food and drink intake by writing it down in a food journal can help keep your head straight on all the calories and can help keep you from overeating.
2.Make it Official
Signing up for a New Year’s 5K or holiday challenge will keep you motivated to stay moving during those days when all you feel like is being lazy. Knowing you have a race in a couple of weeks will not only push you to train but it will also help keep your diet in check too.
Instead of indulging in sweet treats loaded down with sugar and fats, treat yourself to a new pair of workout leggings of a fun running top. Buying cute new workout clothes will be an extra push of motivation to get you moving.
4.Use TV time wisely
The days where going outside is a definite no-go doesn’t mean you have to be a total couch potato. Instead of plopping down on the couch for your latest Netflix binge, focus on stretching with straps or foam rolling your muscles as you watch your favorite show.
5.Get a workout buddy
You’re not the only one looking for a little needed motivation this holiday season to stay fit. There is strength in numbers! Grab a friend or family member to schedule your workouts with. You are more likely to honor those fitness commitments when you know someone is waiting for you.
6.Make family time active time
The more the merrier! Plan a friendly game of touch football after dinner or gather everyone to take a brisk walk. This way, you’ll not be moving your body more but you’ll also be making lasting memories!
7.Make shopping a sport
Shopping for all your loved ones can feel like it’s taking you all over town. Lace up your sneakers and power-walk in between stores at the mall to get your heart rate up. And instead of the escalator, get those legs burning by taking the stairs in between levels.
8.Holiday Party Hack
Here’s a great tip for your next party get-together. Nutritionists suggest holding your drink in your dominant hand so that you are less likely to mindlessly reach for snacks. Also, wearing your favorite curve hugging little black dress will make you less likely to overeat.
